Pico Iyer is an award-winning author, travel writer, global soul, and very cool guy. We have a lot in common. Pico and I share a love for roads less traveled.
I met Pico in an L.A. bookstore in 1994, where he autographed his book “Falling Off the Map” for me with the inscription: “For Barbara, Wishing you many more happy adventures and travels.” I thanked Pico for his warm wishes and inspiring, often hilarious, stories in some of the Earth’s most wild, remote, and surreal destinations.
Places whose wild, untamed nature can open up a new world before you… and within you. Places where you see yourself, your life, and its possibilities, with new eyes.
As I like to say, where you find your true nature in Nature.
Few places on the planet make me feel more alive, present, and open to what’s new and true for me than Africa. Each of my nine journeys there has revealed its own magic, however, when it comes to wide open spaces, jaw-dropping desert beauty, and a road trip like no other, Namibia is it!
In fact, the New York Times just named Namibia as one of the top destinations to visit in 2023. “Namib” means “vast place” and the Namib desert is the oldest in the world. Namibia’s desolate and spectacular coastline is also where 1000-foot sand dunes descend into the South Atlantic Ocean.
Namibia is the kind of place where you can immerse yourself in untouched nature, untamed wildlife, and off-road experiences that not only leave you feeling alive, but also changed.
As a passionate explorer, and someone who has led retreats both locally and internationally, I have witnessed the power of a small group of adventurers journeying together to engage with life, others, and Mother Nature in deeper, more courageous, and intuitive ways.
