This week I’ve been experiencing a lot of synchronicity… meaningful “coincidences,” fortuitous meetings, messages, and opportunities showing up unexpectedly. Put simply, I’ve been following my intuition.

And now I’m preparing (not coincidentally) a keynote called “The Awakened Business Woman,” for a group of women entrepreneurs, about practical ways to use their intuition and inner wisdom to accelerate success.

Most people (including business people) don’t access and follow their intuition because it’s not visible, tangible, or “real” and therefore, in their view, has no “practical” use or application.

Well, my friends, you can’t see or touch your Wi-Fi connection, but it allows you to access the internet, watch movies on your laptop, and talk to your friends on the other side of the planet. I’d say that’s not only practical, it’s miraculous.

So back to making the “intangible” practical… intuition is not only real, it’s your highest source of wisdom. It’s not some ethereal, New Age-y magical skill—it’s an intelligence, and according to research one that’s encoded in our DNA and cells.

Intuition is natural, not supernatural. It’s a skill that can be practiced, honed, and might just blow your mind when you know how to use it for your highest good.

Right, so how can that intuitive intelligence be applied in your business, career, or other work?

Here’s what I know for sure… in my experience, each time I follow my intuition and heart’s intelligence, I have a deeper understanding of my own creative power—and creating my own reality. Magic happens. Things unfold, people show up, and wild opportunities appear “out of the blue.”

Just to give you a few examples, tuning into my intuitive wisdom allowed me to:

  • Switch careers from being a pediatric nurse to attaining a MA in Journalism within one year (!)
  • Become a writer, magazine editor, and best-selling author, including publishing my latest book Creating the Impossible
  • Take a life-changing writer’s course in Swaziland! (My first trip of 4 trips to Africa in the last 2 1/2 years)
  • Climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, while raising thousands of dollars for kids in Kenya
  • Begin the next phase of my work now, teaching and mentoring others to realize their dreams or big goals by connecting to their creative power

And all of that, and more, are possible for you, too.

Here are a 5 ways to activate and increase your intuition:

  • Be present and open to receive.

When you’re in the present moment, with a relaxed and open mind, you can hear and listen to your intuition much better. That’s why great ideas, including business ideas, often come to us when we’re walking in nature, going for a run, or in the shower.  As author Steven Pressfield would say, you have to “open the pipeline to the Muse,” the Muse being your imagination and source beyond conscious awareness.

  • Follow your true vision.

Steve Jobs called intuition more powerful than intellect. Your intuitive intelligence knows things your mind cannot explain; it also knows the essence of your purpose or vision.

Intuitive business leaders, from Branson to Buffet, are not motivated or limited by external conditions. They are inspired by the VISION, its meaning and value, that enables them to tap into an expanded awareness to see solutions and opportunities others cannot.

  • Get out of your head and into your heart.

Your heart has its own intelligence—this is science not philosophy—and communicates with the mind, just like the brain does with the body, through an electromagnetic field. And the heart’s energy field is even more powerful than the brain’s.

So when faced with big problems or decisions, rather than overthinking and trying to “figure it all out,” tap into your heart’s wisdom (intuition) to show you a better, simpler way.

In the words of Eileen Caddy, “Cease trying to work everything out with your minds. It will get you nowhere. Live by intuition and inspiration and let your whole life be a revelation.”

  • Trust your body’s wisdom.

Whether it’s your “gut instinct,” goose bumps, butterflies in your stomach, or feeling “something just isn’t right” your body’s sensations are another way intuition speaks to you.  Does a business decision, purchase, or partnership feel right or not? Follow that first impulse; trust your gut.

  • Pay attention to synchronicity, signs, and symbols.

Our higher self (soul) often speaks to us through serendipitous experiences, meetings and messages. By tuning into and learning to interpret these personal signs, symbols, and moments of synchronicity you will become more intuitive… and successful in manifesting what you want.

For example, did you hear the name of a book three times in a row? Go to a movie and feel like a character was speaking directly to you? Attend an unplanned event and meet the perfect person to help you with a project or goal?

Pick up your inner messages and you might get an answer you never expected… and is just what you needed.

Your intuition shows your thinking mind where to look, and act, next.
